Horses & Ponies

Although horses and ponies are of the same species (Equus ferus caballus) they are generally broken down into their separate categories by a breed’s average height.

A horse is usually taller than 14.2 hands (each hand is about 4 inches) in height, while a pony is under 14.2 hands. There are exceptions, but this is the the general rule.
